I am not a history teacher. Obviously.

So far, I have had two students declare in their papers that Beowulf is among the oldest works of literature in existence. According to one of them, it may in fact be the first epic poem!

I can assure you that I did not give them this idea.

About seven to go and then I'm done with everything but the stragglers....

My students do that too. Throw in "oldest, only, first, best" etc when it is very untrue and really not necessary anyhow. I'm not sure why.

Maybe they think that it adds force to the argument. So long as we don't notice...?

Um, yeah. Baffling.

Heu Mihi, good luck finishing up the semester. Have a good break. Have fun at your discipline's end-of-the-year conference.

If you were a history teacher, you would have been so numbed by constant repetitions of "Since the beginning of human history..." that you wouldn't have batted an eye.

Do you ever think that our students end our classes dumber than when they started? That's how I feel about one of my two classes now.
